Reduce accidents and save lives with HFST

28% of traffic fatalities in the U.S occur at horizontal curves, increase your friction and reduce crash incidents with WJ’s High Friction Surface Treatment.

What is a High Friction Surface Treatment?

HFST is a safety treatment where specialised 100% calcined bauxite aggregate is combined with a binder and applied to asphalt or concrete, to enhance the coefficient of friction on the road’s surface. This aggregate creates more contact points between the tyre and the road, with a resistance to polishing, enhancing surface grip and decreasing stopping distances.

No other pavement surface treatments are known to enhance the pavement friction to the same level.

WJ has specialized equipment and a team of experts ready to deliver HFST across any highway network. Our commitment is to deliver quick and efficient applications with minimal disruption that improve safety for all drivers and pedestrians.

Where is HFST typically used?

High Friction Surface Treatments will increase skid resistance in safety critical locations across highways, freeways, suburban, and urban roads.

  • Sharp horizontal curves
  • Intersections
  • Highways and freeways
  • Accident black spots
  • High traffic areas
  • Sidewalks
  • Approaching Pedestrian Walkways

Benefits of High Friction Surface Treatments

Research from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) shows that high friction surface treatment can reduce wet crashes by 83% and total crashes by 57%.

  • 2-3x more friction is generated between the road and vehicle tyres.
  • Its fast application and setting time ensures minimal disruption to road users.
  • HFST can last up to 10 years if applied to sound substrates and properly maintained.

Features of WJ HFST:

  • Made in the USA
  • High strength, low modulus epoxy binder
  • Rapid cure return to traffic formula
  • Independent testing lab certification
  • Convenient 1:1 mix ratio
  • Fixes cracks across highway applications
  • Protects concrete from water and de-icing salts
  • Chemically resistant to fuel and antifreeze

The surface is assessed using a multi-pin moisture meter, to ensure it has a moisture level of less than 5%.

Dust, grease, debris and any curing compounds are removed from the pavement surface through shot blasting.

The resin binder is then applied via an applicator vehicle, to ensure a continuous pass as one layer. The bauxite high friction aggregate simultaneously covers the resin.
