Captive shot blasting abrasion is suitable for all asphalt substrates. This system uses graded steel shot, which is fired at an optimum velocity to abrade and reprofile exposed aggregate. This process is managed from the cab via a computer and touchscreen system. Our operators are highly skilled, monitoring all activity via high-quality onboard cameras and making fine adjustments where necessary.
With captive abrasive friction enhancements, the spent shot, excess bitumen, fine aggregate, and other detritus are collected. Using a sophisticated suction system, this is separated, reclaimed, and the shot is then reused.
Features and Benefits
- Cost-effective solution to increase skid resistance and extend asset life.
- Enhances road safety and reduces accidents.
- Ideal for all asphalt and concrete substrates.
- Environmentally friendly, with materials recycled and a very low carbon footprint.
- Quick single vehicle process with no sweeper required, ensuring minimal traffic disruption.
- Provides initial skid resistance on new asphalt and concrete surfacing.
- Does not damage road striping, inset crosswalk markers, or expansion joints.
- Delays the need for resurfacing.
- Micro GripTester surveys are used to identify and report on surface conditions.
- Truck mounted for rapid treatment of large areas.
WJ has adapted its captive abrasive friction enhancement system for use on retexturing concrete surfaces. By varying the speed of our vehicles and increasing the size of the shot and the velocity at which it is propelled, we’re able to substantially increase both the micro-texture and macro-texture on concrete surfaces.
Captive abrasive friction enhancement can be carried out across the full width of the highway or from within the vehicle wheel tracks. We work closely with our customers to understand the specific project requirements and conduct an inspection of all sites prior to choosing the safest and most efficient application methodology.
In accordance with asset management best practice, both depth and skid resistance values are measured both before and after treatment using a Micro GripTester. WJ will then produce a full report for our customers.
Our retexturing processes are environmentally advantageous. Through our WJ Group lifecycle analysis, we can report a 96% saving in carbon emissions in comparison to resurfacing the highway.
Captive abrasive friction enhancement processes are quick to complete, they extend asset life and delay the need for full resurfacing. The environmental benefits are significant, with no natural aggregates being consumed, low carbon emissions, and arisings being recovered and recycled.
