I-70 / I-470 Interchange, Jackson County, Missouri

When the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) identified the need to restore and improve friction levels at the I-70/I-470 interchange, it looked for contractors capable of delivering a fast, high-quality safety upgrade with minimal disruption. WJ Surface Treatments was selected to carry out the works, completing the full removal and replacement of HFST using our advanced Flatliner Precision Grinding technology—providing a modern, efficient alternative to traditional Diamond Grinding.

Cedar Grove Rd – Bobtown Bridge, Houma, Louisiana

In early 2025, WJ Surface Treatments completed a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) project for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) in Houma, Louisiana. The project targeted a two-lane roadway with varying shoulder widths and was delivered using fully automated HFST equipment.

Route 62 to the I-77, Ohio

In an effort to enhance roadway safety, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) commissioned a scheme to apply High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) on two ramps connecting Route 62 to the I-77 in Stark County. WJ Surface Treatments was selected by the prime contractor, Karvo Companies, to complete the project using their cost-effective safety solutions. Through the utilization of their advanced application technology, the HFST was installed by WJ within a four-day timeline and has improved skid resistance on these heavily trafficked ramps and will lead to a reduction in accident rates.

Highway 29, Valley, Alabama

In December 2024, WJ Surface Treatments completed a road safety project using High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) on Highway 29 in Valley, Alabama for the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

Chena Ridge Rd, Fairbanks, Alaska

When the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities identified that the Chena Ridge Road required high friction surface treatment, it looked for contractors that could efficiently deliver this vital road safety solution. As a result, WJ Surface Treatments, won the contract and completed the first fully autonomous road surface treatment in Alaska.

I-95 to Congress Ave, Boca Raton, Florida

After being approached for our expertise in high friction surfacing WJ’s first high friction surface treatment (HFST) of 2024 was completed at the Southbound exit off I-95 to Congress Ave in Boca Raton, FL. The exit ramp is known as the most dangerous overpass in South Florida. This exit ramp had a HFST installed in 2018 to reduce these accidents. In 2023, the original HFST was deemed to be worn and ineffective. WJ, working with Skidabrader Group and Prince Contracting, LLC milled and removed the old layer and installed a new HFST layer to improve the safety of this ramp.
